Final Report for the CORE Organic II funded project "Restrictive use of antibiotics in organic animal farming – a potential for safer, high quality products with less antibiotic resistant bacteria - SafeOrganic" Organic Eprints
Aabo, Søren.
• The level of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from organic vs. conventional pigs has been compared for approximate 25 herds of each production system in DK, FR, IT and SE, by sampling faeces at farm or colon content at slaughterhouse from two pigs per herd. • An E. coli isolate was obtained from each sample and subjected to analysis of MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values for comparison of the resistance towards 10 antibiotics between production systems. Resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides, tetracycline and trimethoprim was most common – ranging from 14% to 75% of E. coli isolates from conventional pigs and from 1% to 46% of isolates from organic pigs. The resistance towards these five antibiotics varied markedly between...

Restricted use of antibiotics in organic pig farming Organic Eprints
Aabo, Søren; Jensen, Annette Nygaard.
Can the restricted use of antibiotics in organic pig farming be documented to provide a safer, high quality meat product with less antibiotic resistant bacteria? The project SafeOrganic aims to document that the restricted use of antimicrobials in organic pig production leads to lower levels of antibiotic resistant bacteria compared with the level in conventional pigs. However, the project will also address the risk of losing this quality parameter, due to a widespread practice of slaughtering organic pigs together with conventional pigs, implying a risk of cross-contamination.

Main-streaming participatory and cross-disciplinary approaches in animal science research in developing countries Organic Eprints
Aagaard-Hansen, J.; Larsen, C.E. Schou; Halberg, N.; Hjortsø, C.N.; Gausset, . Q.; Kabirizi, J..
Conventional research approaches have lost considerable momentum after their astonishing achieve-ments during the green revolution. The negative side of focusing rigorously on production improve-ment was eminent around 1980 and led to considerations of environmental, gender and equity aspects - making agricultural development much more complex than previously. In the search for new ways of addressing the persisting problems of food insecurity and malnutrition, new ways should be explored. Based on the experiences from three international, African research projects, the article argues the case of participatory action research and cross-disciplinarity as some of the key elements in future animal science research in developing countries. The benefits are...

Views of consumers and other food chain actors on organic food and its production Organic Eprints
Aakkula, Jyrki; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Jakosuo, Katri; Kottila, Marja-Riitta; Rönni, Päivi; Sarkkinen, Eliisa.
In this study we have examined what kind of views and attitudes consumers and other food chain actors have concerning organic food and its production and how these views and attitudes differ. The survey data from year 2003 consist of responses by 1 186 consumers and 333 other food chain actors. The main methods used in the analysis of survey responses were factor, cluster and discriminant analyses. With the help of these methods, consumers and other food chain actors were clustered into various groups. The discriminant analysis was based on respondents’ attitudes towards organic food and organic food production. As a result of the analysis, five differing attitudinal groups among the consumers were identified. These attitudinal groups were Believers,...

Challenges for risk management related to emerging animal diseases Organic Eprints
Aaltonen, Taina.
The uncertainties related to climate change and its effects on the spreading of animal diseases causes the most difficulties for the risk management. Preparedness and contingency planning for serious animal diseases in EU has mainly focused on conventional animal diseases, like foot- and-mouth-disease, classical swine fever and avian influenza.

Organic Eprints
Aanensen, Lise; Henriksen, Britt I. F..
Regelverket for økologisk produksjon(EU-reg.

Aarestrup, Frank Møller; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Enevoldsen, Carsten; Houe, Hans; Katholm, Jørgen; Larsen, Helle Daugaard; Nylin, Britta; Pedersen, Lars Holst.

Feeding mastitis milk to organic dairy calves: effect on health and performance during suckling and on udder health at first calving Organic Eprints
Abb-Schwedler, Katharina; Maeschli, Ariane; Boss, Renate; Graber, Hans U.; Steiner, Adrian; Klocke, Peter.
Background Infection pathways of S. aureus udder infections in heifers are still not well understood. One hypothesis is that calves become infected with S. aureus via feeding mastitis milk. Especially on small-scale farms, pasteurisers are not economic. The purpose of this randomised comparative study was to investigate the influence of feeding milk containing S. aureus genotype B (SAGTB) on the health and development of calves and udder health of the respective heifers. Additionally, a method reducing the bacterial load to obtain safer feeding milk was tested. Thirty-four calves were fed mastitis milk from cows with subclinical SAGTB mastitis. One group was fed untreated milk (UMG). For the other group, milk was thermised at 61°C for one minute (heat...

A multidisciplinary approach to improve the quality of organic wheat-bread chain Organic Eprints
Abecassis, Joël; David, Christophe; Fontaine, Laurence; Taupier-Létage, Bruno; Viaux, P..
The main challenge for organic farmers, millers and bakers is to fulfill consumers’ expectations of providing healthy and safe products. The quality of organic grain can be modulated by agronomic modifications on genotypes, crop management, crop rotation and soil fertility, but the milling process and finally the baking process are also key factors in producing bread of high baking quality, nutritional value, taste and flavour. Nitrogen (N) is a key nutrient in achieving acceptable yield levels of sufficient bread-making quality, but previous results have shown that organic wheat tends to have lower protein content, dough mixing tolerance and loaf volume. The selection of genotypes with high N use efficiency, weed competitiveness and disease resistance...
